Zoo Med Repti Fogger Review: Is This Reptile Humidifier Worth It?

Maintaining proper humidity levels is crucial for the health and happiness of many reptiles and amphibians. However, it can be challenging to keep humidity consistently high, especially when life gets busy. Enter the Zoo Med Repti Fogger – an automated terrarium humidifier that promises to effortlessly mist your pet’s habitat. But does it live up to the hype? I tested out this gadget to find out if it’s worth the investment. Keep reading for my full Zoo Med Repti Fogger review.

What is the Zoo Med Repti Fogger?

The Zoo Med Repti Fogger is an electric terrarium humidifier designed specifically for reptiles and amphibians. It automatically emits a cool mist to raise humidity levels inside your pet’s enclosure.

The user-friendly design includes an adjustable nozzle, a 1 liter bottle, and a dial to control mist volume. The fogger turns on and off as needed to maintain your desired humidity range. This hands-free approach saves you time and effort compared to manual misting.

According to the manufacturer the Repti Fogger is suitable for all types of tropical sub-tropical, and desert reptiles and amphibians. Some examples include dart frogs, chameleons, day geckos, bearded dragons, leopard geckos, green tree pythons, and more. It can increase humidity in tanks up to 100 gallons.

First Impressions and Unboxing

My Zoo Med Repti Fogger arrived in a compact box with a clear window showcasing the unit inside. Right away, I could tell it was well-packaged and all parts were protected during shipping.

Inside the box, all components were neatly arranged in sealed bags: the base, the cover, the water bottle, the nozzle, the hose, and the valve. At first glance, the quality appeared high, with a sleek white and blue color scheme and sturdy construction.

The included instructions were straightforward with clear diagrams walking through each assembly step. I had the fogger fully put together in just a few minutes with no issues.

One thing I appreciated was the default hose length of 10 inches. Many terrarium foggers come with extremely long hoses that need to be cut down. This one was perfectly pre-sized for my 20 gallon habitat.

Ease of Use

Operating the Zoo Med Repti Fogger daily is a breeze thanks to its simple and intuitive design. To start misting, just follow these easy steps:

  1. Fill water bottle with distilled water only and attach to base.

  2. Position nozzle where desired and plug into outlet.

  3. Turn dial to the middle setting as a starting point.

  4. Let it run for a few minutes until reservoir is filled. You may need to gently squeeze bottle to prime it.

  5. Adjust mist to lower or higher volume as needed.

  6. Refill water as required depending on duration of use.

The helpful blue light indicates fogger activity so you can easily monitor function. I’ve found performance to be consistent day after day. The most effort is refilling the bottle – other than that, it’s practically on autopilot.

Misting Quality

In my testing, the Zoo Med Repti Fogger performed impressively well at increasing humidity inside my crested gecko’s enclosure. I tried it on both the lowest and highest dial settings.

On low, it generated a light haze that slowly raised the humidity from 60% to 80% over the course of an hour. The mist was ultra-fine and evaporated quickly.

At the max setting, it pumped out dense clouds of vapor that shot the humidity up to 95% within minutes. I was able to find the right balance for my desired range by experimenting with the adjustable dial.

The fog felt cool and refreshing when I held my hand in front of the nozzle. I don’t have an exact temperature, but can confirm it won’t blast your pet with hot steam. The relatively quiet motor also means the fogger won’t cause stress or disturbance.

One tip: Make sure to use only distilled water as directed. I tried tap water once and it started sputtering minerals after just a few uses which affected the mist quality.

Maintenance

Upkeep for the Zoo Med Repti Fogger is fast and easy thanks to the no-spill design. When it’s time for a water change, I simply lift up the bottle from the base and bring it to the sink. The valve prevents any dripping or leaking in transit.

Rinsing out the bottle and wiping down the nozzle takes just a minute or two. So far, I haven’t needed to do any soaking or deep cleaning of the components.

One maintenance must: only use distilled water, never tap. Tap water leaves mineral deposits over time that can clog up the fogger. Distilled water optimizes performance and extends the machine’s lifespan.

Accessories

Out of the box, the Zoo Med Repti Fogger runs as a passive humidifier. In other words, it operates continuously whenever plugged in and turned on.

To gain more advanced functionality, like automatic on/off control, you need to purchase a separate humidistat accessory. This allows you to set specific humidity parameters so the fogger will switch on automatically when humidity drops below the target.

Zoo Med’s ReptiTemp 500R Controller works well for this purpose. It allows you to set a desired RH% range and will switch the fogger on and off accordingly. This takes the guesswork out of humidity maintenance.

You can also add timers, dual hygrometers, and other accessories to further customize operation. The Repti Fogger is compatible with most reptile controllers and power units on the market.

Pros:

  • Easy to set up and use

  • Adjustable mist output

  • Large water capacity

  • Helps maintain consistent humidity

  • Quiet operation

  • Safety auto shut-off feature

  • No-spill bottle for easy refilling

  • Long flexible hose reaches all tank areas

Cons:

  • Requires distilled water only

  • No auto on/off without humidistat

  • Hose may need occasional cleaning

  • Higher price point but worth it

Who Should Buy The Zoo Med Repti Fogger?

The Zoo Med Repti Fogger is ideal for keepers of reptiles/amphibians that need moderate to high humidity. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Dart frogs
  • Chameleons
  • Day geckos
  • Crested geckos
  • GTPs (green tree pythons)
  • Iguanas
  • Anoles
  • Tropical lizards

It can work for any size vivarium from 10 gallons up to 100+ gallons. Just keep in mind it may need to run more frequently for larger enclosures.

This fogger is perfect for those with busy schedules who want to automate humidity maintenance. It takes the hassle out of manual misting 1-2 times per day. Simply turn it on and let it run its cycle.

The Zoo Med Repti Fogger is NOT ideal for species that require low humidity like leopard geckos, bearded dragons, and uromastyx. It may also not be suitable for 24/7 operation, so you still need to check humidity levels daily.

Conclusion: A Reliable Workhorse Humidifier

After several weeks of testing, I can confidently recommend the Zoo Med Repti Fogger to anyone struggling with insufficient terrarium humidity. It’s not perfect – no product ever is. But it does exactly what it claims and requires minimal owner effort.

For me, the pros far outweigh any cons. The adjustable mist output, large water capacity, and foolproof design make humidity maintenance a breeze. My tank humidity has improved remarkably since installing this fogger.

Yes, it does cost more than basic manual misters. However, it automates a tedious and time-consuming daily task for pet owners. The reliability and performance justify the price in my opinion.

If you want to provide your reptile or amphibian with optimal humidity without the hassle of frequent misting, the Zoo Med Repti Fogger is a fantastic solution. This convenient gadget takes the guesswork out of humidity control so you can relax and focus on enjoying your pet.

Perfect for Hermit Crabs

The Zoomed humidifier is pretty much required if you have Hermit crabs, they can breathe air through their hardehardemodifiedn ed modified gills but require a humid environment to live. This has been a great way to keep out hermit crabs happy and healthy. The unit performs well for years if you clean it properly and use only filtered water NOT DISTILLED WATER! DISTILLED water kills everything eventually by leaching out minerals from all it touches. I use the Zoomed temp/humidity control computer to maintain a proper temp and humidity. Great products and our oldest hermit crab of 9 years thanks you for making a product set that allows him to live happily! Make sure you keep it clean! Minerals build up and it needs to be revealed from time to time.
