Exo Terra Forest Moss Review – A Natural Terrarium Substrate

Post date |

Exo Terra Forest Moss is an all-natural terrarium substrate made from compressed moss collected from forest floors in Asia. As someone who loves creating naturalistic vivariums for my reptiles and amphibians, I was eager to try out this product and see how it performs. In this review, I’ll share my experience using Exo Terra’s Forest Moss and whether or not I think it’s worth purchasing.

Overview of Features

Exo Terra Forest Moss comes in brick form but expands significantly when rehydrated. It contains no artificial dyes or chemicals and is safe for burrowing pets. The company states that it’s an ideal substrate for species that enjoy humid environments, such as frogs, geckos, and salamanders. It can also be used to create humid hides to aid with shedding.

According to Exo Terra, the moss is absorbent and encourages natural behaviors like burrowing and egg-laying. Once hydrated, it’s easy to handle and shape as needed inside the terrarium. While not vibrant green in color, it provides good coverage and a natural look.

My Experience Using This Moss

I bought a brick of Exo Terra’s Forest Moss to use in my crested gecko’s tank. Upon rehydrating it, I was surprised by the large volume of moss it produced. It expanded to around 5-6 times the original size. The color was a dull brownish-green, but perfectly fine for a natural setup.

I formed some of the hydrated moss into a humid hide/egg-laying spot for my gecko. She took to it right away and I often find her curled up inside. The moss has retained moisture well boosting the overall humidity. It also gives my gecko opportunities to dig and burrow which is great enrichment.

The only downsides are that it tends to smell earthy when wet and doesn’t last forever. After a couple months, it started to break down and lose its structure. But for the price, I found it to be an affordable and effective option. While not miraculously coming back to life, it served its purpose for a while.

Final Verdict

Overall, I think Exo Terra’s Forest Moss is a good product, especially considering the low cost. It provides solid performance for boosting humidity and enabling natural behaviors in tropical setups. I would recommend it for temporary use or as an underlayer topped with something more visually appealing. For the price, it’s a versatile way to add interest and enrichment to a vivarium.

Great value & product

This moss is really good because its a dry block and you can just break of a bit and rehydrate what you need! I have snakes that need high humidity and this is perfect for putting in their hides while theyre shedding as it really holds humidity, I use it in the hides of the non humid enclosures during shedding time too, excellent product and I wouldnt use anything else.
